Judge Pushes Mar-a-Lago Docs/Espionage Act Case to May

Following a request by Trump’s legal team to push the trial date back indefinitely, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon responded by setting a May 20, 2024 trial date. This is instead of the original tentative date set in August and of the December 11, 2023 date proposed by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

It seems that Cannon, a Trump appointee, chose to split the difference. Whether this was or was not an impartial decision remains to be seen. Her track record in this regard is less than stellar, having previously blocked the FBI‘s use of seized documents (a decision that was reversed by the 11th Circuit on appeal).

While I’m no legal expert, it kind of feels like this new date leaves the door wide open for defense team claims of election interference due to timing, though most of us are well aware of the fact that none of this is that.

*This* is a country seeking to hold to account an ex-President who, by his own admission on repeated occasions, broke serious laws and ignored reasonable requests and all opportunities given to rectify the situation; and in doing so, put the entire country in harm’s way. Being held to account is a foreign and frightening concept to Trump, which is why he’s scared and why he’s doubling and tripling down on veiled (and some not-so-veiled) mob-like threats.

Coupled with details released in recent articles about his plans for a second term and the literal planned destruction of American democracy at the hands of the GOP and the Heritage Foundation, it is clear that elections leading up to and including the 2024 Presidential election (and likely many after as well) are *the most important* elections of our lifetime.

I implore you—every single one of you—to be diligent in the seeking of facts, to thoroughly vet the information you’re finding and choosing to share, to ensure your voter registration is valid and updated at regular intervals; and to join the Democratic fight to preserve our democracy and all the rights and freedoms to which it has afforded us, in addition to regaining those the GOP has wrongfully stripped from us, and to work together to build a better, brighter, more equitable and promising future for ALL of us.
